Q: Asthma medication problem please help?
I am a severe asthmatic, I have been all my life. I have gone through most of the medication out there and at the moment I am on Symbicort, and it is working better than anything before! My only problem is, I am living in New Zealand temporarily (could be another 4-6 months), and am running out of my Symbicort. I am an Australian citizen, when i left Australia i brought about 5 symbicort puffers with me – thinking it will be enough, but it isn’t. I have looked into getting a prescription in NZ to get some more, but as I am not a NZ citizen, I will be charged around $140 per puffer. This is a price i literally can’t afford. I am used to paying arond $33 in Australia. I have also tried getting a new prescription from Australia over the phone, but they wont do ANYTHING unless I’m there in person.
My Doc prescribed me to take 2 doses twice daily, and when required as a reliever.
Does ANYONE have any ideas what I could do? Please help, I’m running out of time.

A: Try going online to PPARX. It’s an organization that will work with the drug manufacturers here in the United States to either lower or eliminate your out of pocket cost for prescription medicines. (Of course, you’ll still need to see a physician there to obtain a valid prescription, but that’s the easy part.) I’m not positive that they will be able to help you, but it’s worth a try. If PPARX can’t help you in New Zealand, maybe they can put you in contact with someone who can. Being an asthmatic myself who takes Symbicort I understand your panic. Montel Williams(The Montel Williams Show) is the spokesman for PPARX . When you search it on the net, it will bring up numerous companies which do basically the same service. Best of luck to you.

My mother has tried to get some but they will only prescribe it to me in person.

A: I agree with getting someone in Australia to get a script for you and send it. But there are some pharmacies that may coordinate internationally (like they do here in the US) where your regular doctor can call in the medication in Australia and then a pharmacy in NZ can call and have it transferred to NZ.

You are right about not stopping taking it though. Good luck!
