Q: Is there a natural remedy or treatment for my cat allergies?
We want to get our daughter a cat, because shes love them so much. But I’m kind of allergic, but not violently. And an outside cat in our area isnt an option. I can go to a friends house where there are cats and be fine as long as I dont touch my eyes or sit on anything with lots of fur on it. But I’m used to being careful. With my own cat, I would like to be able to hold and pet it without worrying about all the dander flying in my face. I would prefer not to take normal allergy meds, all that I have tried make me sleepy, even “non-drowsy” ones. Plus I’m not fond of the idea of taking a drug everyday. Does anyone know of any natural allergy treatments? I’ve seen them for plant allergies, but do they work for pet allergies, or is there a different thing for that? Also, is there an allergy shot that you can get?
A: Use two drops of peppermint essential oil on the back of your neck twice a day. This works for 98% of the people I’ve recommended it to. Test-drive this remedy at your friend’s house before letting your daughter get a cat, just in case you’re part of the 2%. You should be able to buy a bottle at the health food store for less than $15usd. Just make sure it’s 100% pure essential oil. Please feel free to email me with any questions.

Q: Have any of you tried the NAET treatment for allergies?
I’m nearing the end of the treatment, but am frustrated that my seasonal allergies are not improving yet. My practitioner is encouraging me to stay with it.
Glad to hear from someone else doing NAET. I think my problem may be some plants that are not in the kits that may be native to the area I live. Otherwise, i have cleared everything else 3 times. Also, maybe some molds that are not in the kits. not sure. She has started me on self testing but I am struggling with that. I do have the book, but it kind of confuses me. I feel like I have a lot to learn yet. Which self test do you do? I’ve tried both that they show to do in the book and I’m not successful yet. You must just need to practice it alot. Glad to hear that you and your son are doing well. That’s great for your son, sounds like his problems were becoming severe.
A: My son and I both do NAET. I’m a firm believer. I’m wondering if you maybe one of your previous things you passed actually popped out. Did you ask your practitioner why it’s not improving? My son’s allergies have gotten drastically better. When we went to her he was supposed to get on a steroid inhaler, and was taking his regular inhaler three to four times a day, plus Singulair. Now he’s off his inhaler, never took the steroid, and soon will be off Singulari.
Ours also has taught us how to self treat. Make sure your practitioner does that too. That way if you’re ever noticing symptoms, you can self-treat and not wait until you see him/her to get better in between treatments.
But I would definitely ask why you’re not getting better yet if you’re near the end. That doesn’t make sense to me.
You asked which self-treatment we did. I’m not sure what book you have, but the treatment we do, isn’t in the book she gave us. She just has me massage a couple points. On my son I go down his spine, and first have him breathe in, then breathe out, then pant like a dog, then I go down his shoulder blade line, and he breathes normal. I repeat this three times.
Then I do his points in a clock-wise motion, at the spot between thumb and first finger, both hands. The bend of the elbow, both. The inside ankle bone, both legs. In between big toe and next toe, both feet. On myself, I only do these points, as I obviously can’t reach my own back! But you could ask your practitioner to show you which points better than me explaining them.

Q: Has anyone used Atopica (a medication) for the treatment of allergies in dogs?
My Schnauzer has had allergies all his life and we have tried everthing from immunitherapy to steriod shots , allergy tablets ( Benadryl, Clariten etc.)to atopic shampoos and conditioners. So far nothing has helped very much. I’m considering the use of the drug Atopica but can’t find anyone who has used it or if it is worth the expense as it is quite expensive. Please help if you have any advice on the use of this medication. Barney sure could use some relief.
A: I work as a Vet Nurse and have seen a few of our patients be put on the drug Atopica. We have seen great results. Even though it is quite expensive i think its sure worth the try. One of our patients had been on all sorts of other medications, shampoos etc and as soon as they started him on Atopica he was a new dog, never scratching and happy as ever. I can’t say it will work as well for your dog but if the vets reccomended your dog take it, it might just be the answer!
Good Luck
Q: What is a good allergy medication or treatment for allergies to mold spores?
Please, only answers from people who go through this or from someone medically qualified to answer. And I prefer some medication that is not too harsh, like Allegra! I’m looking for something that won’t whack me out.
A: It all depends on how mild/severe your symptoms are to the mold. I would say start with bleach and kill as much mold as you can. Depending on your signs/symptoms if you are having just nasal congestion try Flonase, Nasonex, or Nasoqort. If you have congestion in the chest, sinus cavities, sneeze, runny nose…try Zyrtec or Allegra. You can also try Claritin, Alivert, or good old Benadryl (all OTC meds). If you having itchy watery eyes…Patinol works wonders.
Either way see an allergist to have testing done to see how severe your allergies are…sometimes you need to have multiple meds to combat the allergies just to function till you can start shot therapy.
Hope this helps from someone who is just about allergic to everything.
Q: what is the best treatment for flea allergies in dogs?
I have 2 dogs, a Shar pei and a miniature Aussie. Both have severe flea allergies and we have tried almost everything. It seems as if even one flea will make them break out, lose hair and scratch uncontrollably. Any suggestions?
A: There is a prescription spray called Knockout for use only in dogs- cannot get anywhere near cats because it can cause serious damage including death. The specialists in Florida- where we have fleas 12 months out of the year- recommend it for the dogs that are allergic to fleas. The clients that I have on it love it- works great. Along the same lines as Frontline spray- but works against different things than frontline. See the link below for more info on fleas and treating than you ever wanted to know.
Q: Homeopathic treatment options for a dog with allergies?
Does anyone use a homeopathic remedy for allergies? I have a 14 wk old puppy who has seasonal allergies I want to use a homeopathic treatment before I resort to a steroidal treatment. He has itchy skin and congestion? We don’t have a homeopathic vet in the area but I have used homeopathy at the farm I work at.
A: Find a voodoo priestess & black rooster-that’ll do as much good.
Pray tell, just WHO & how was this “diagnoses” made? Sheer guesswork by..???
Q: Can I get treatment for my allergies while breastfeeding?
I have severe environmental and food allergies. I am also breastfeeding my 3 month old son and suffering through the summer. Today I am going to get new tests done to see exactly what I am allergic to environmentally (a few years ago I was allergic to 24 out of the 27 things they tested me for and had to give me a shot to stop the reactions before I went into anaphylaxis). I also received a shot to help with my allergies that lasted about 3 months while I started my desensitization process (taking 4 shots a week). Is it safe for me to take the shot that helped for 3 months while breastfeeding ? It wasn’t kenelog (or however you spell it) it was something else…which I can’t remember the name.
A: I don’t know about that shot that lasts three months; I have never even heard of it in the U.S. However, I nursed for five years of my life and I know you can safely take desensitation shots and you can also use a steroidal nasal spray. That kind of nasal spray will not dry up your milk or effect the baby.
Q: For Parents with Children with PEANUT allergies: Have you heard about this new treatment?
Apparently, they give the kids itsy bitsy amounts of peanut over a period of time and eventually the kids lose the allergy. I read it somewhere that they’ve begun trials on it and after a year or so, the children lose the allergy.
Anyone heard this or trying this treatment?
A: Yes. And my allergist in Houston is friends with the main person on it.
It will take a LOT of time for this to become mainstream. They tried it a few years ago and one of the children either died or had a near fatal reaction to the “treatment”. So, they stopped it for a while. Now, it is extremely controlled.
My son has a life threatening peanut allergy and personally I won’t be a part of it until it is really proven safe this time.
If anyone you know has a peanut allergy, please check out my website. I have a short animation as well as a list of peanut safe candy (there is so little!). www.judethedude.com
Q: Will treatment of dust allergies with immunotherapy potentially ease an auto immune disease?
I have colitis and I’m gonna have to get dust allergy shots. There are studies that show that most colitis patients have some sort of allergy or something that isn’t normal wether it’s skin problems or asthma.
I was thinking theoretically, if the immune system isn’t always putting out cytokines for reactions to the dust allergy then maybe the colitis reaction wouldnt be as bad?
A: The other name for immunotherapy is allergy shots. Immunotherapy is actually composed of small amounts of the actual environmental (like dust) allergen or allergens to which a person has identifiable reactions and reactions that may range from extremely uncomfortable to severe reactions.
Allergy shots have been shown to work on many environmental allergens, but not food allergies. These shots introduce a very small amount of the actual allergen (1 week to 5 weeks in between shots) over a period of time (1 to 5 years) to hopefully raise the patient’s tolerance level to the allergen(s) in hopes of decreasing reaction to the specific allergens.
They have no other purpose than what I have explained above.
The only effect that may come from being less allergic to dust is a tiny bit of less stress on your other allergies.
The mechanisms are different as far as the colitis is concerned and that is more of an inflammatory problem and will still need to be addressed by other specialists in inflammatory diseases and faulty immune systems.
In conclusion, allergy shots (immunotherapy) are only created and given to raise your tolerance level to a specific allergen (like dust).
