Q: Is here a difference between singulair and advair?
Hello-

My boyfriend has been taking advair for several months. Recently reports have come out about suicidal tendencies and depression linked to singulair. Do you know if this could stem from Advair as well condsidering they are used to treat the same thing? Just curious if anyone knows if there is something in singulair that may be causing this that advair doesnt have in it?

A: There may be a link to how both affect the leukotriines in your cells that cause the allergic reaction.
What kind of allergies does he have? If they are pollen, dust, mold-related, instead of drugs (prescr. or OTC), check on the web for “NETI POT”.
The Neti pot washes your sinuses of all dust, pollen, and mold allergens, and also hydrates the sinus tissues that may be dried-up. I used to use the OTC stuff, and was drowsy all the time. When I started using the Neti pot about a yr. ago, I don’t need ANY prescr. or OTC drug @ all!!
Check on your BF food allergies :
wheat, milk, egg, sugar, yeast, artificial sweeteners (saccharine, Aspartame, MSG), food colors/dyes, pesticides/insecticides (on the fruit and or veggies), household sprays (OUST, WINDEX), and/or scented or plain candles (these too have chemicals).
There are food-allergy tests that your BF could take to check for these, and other allergies. Check out your local health food store and ask for organic foods, fruits, veggies- they’ll be glad to help out!
1 more thing: check out www.doctortalk.com (this is the spam-free website for Dr. Howard Hagglund, a naturapath in Tulsa that specializes in allergies of all kinds).
Hope everything works out for you and your BF. All the best to you and your BF.
(p.s.- there is a possibility he may be allergic to you! There are people who are really allergic to themselves or others! No joke!)

Q: What is Advair and how does it differ from my current inhaler?
Hey. I’ve heard the name Advair as an asthma treatment and to be honest I don’t know what it is. What’s the difference between Advair and my current inhaler which is a “Bricanyl Turboinhaler”? Thanks.

Chris.

A: Advair has fluticasone propionate and salmeterol xinafoate in it. It has both a preventative (fluticasone – steroid)) and a reliever (salmeterol – broncodilator) in it, therefore is good for long term control of asthma symptoms.

Bricanyl only has terbutaline, a bronchodilator in it. It is ideally only used when you have an asthma attack.

Please see source links below for more information.

Q: What’s inside salmeterol in prescription Advair which could kill a few asthmatics?
Salmeterol, like formederol, falls under the class of anti-asthma drugs called LABAs…or long-acting beta agonists. But in very few asthmatics, a few who took prescription Advair, which contains salmeterol, died from asthma still. Why is this happening even though Advair was approved by the FDA as an controller medicine for all asthmatics? And what can we do about it?

A: What an insightful question.

While salmeterol has reduced medical withdrawals due to asthma control compared with SABA’s, it has also been associated with a higher risk for death among patients with severe asthma.

In the most current study of salmeterol vs placebo, salmeterol was associated with slightly higher rates of asthma-related death, respiratory-related death, and the combination of asthma-related deaths, intubation, or mechanical ventilation. This difference largely was confined to African American patients.

Whether this risk is due to factors including but not limited to a physiologic treatment effect, genetic factors, or patient behaviors leading to poor outcomes remains unknown and that is where we are at with this drug.

I guess one would think that the only thing that can be done is a concerted effort to have it withdrawn. But, there is a huge popiulation that this drug is very effective with. So maybe there needs to be a strong re-evaluation to which patient poplation to prescribe the drug to.

Q: Is there a generic drug equivalent to Advair? What do you use to help with YOUR asthma?
I have been taking Advair for years now and it is super expensive and it doesn’t seem to be working as well as it used to either. Does anyone know if Asmanex works liek Advair and is it cheaper? Are there any other generic drugs to help prevent asthma? I have never had a SERIOUS attack but I get mild ones/wheezing off/on. Does anyone use anything herbal that helps with it? Thanks!
Forgot to mention – I usually have asthma in the night/early morning. And sometimes I feel like I can’t catch a full breath – but I have never known if that’s anxiety or asthma and my Dr didnt seem to know either… Also, I tend to get thrush in my throat from the Advair so I’d really like to get away from it !

A: Asmanex is only a steroid to act as a preventative medication. You will still get the thrush from it if you do not rinse you mouth after using it. Your doctor and pharmacist probably didn’t tell you about washing out your mouth. If you don’t you will get thrush. This is a brand new medication so I doubt it would be cheaper.

Advair is a steroid and a bronchodilator. This is a more effective medication. If it is used properly and continuously it is a very good medication. It is only to be used twice a day. You may need to increase the strength.

Anxiety can pose as a mild asthma attack. I have seen this many times. One thing that may help you know the difference is to try what is called pursed-lip breathing. This is done by exhaling with you lips partially closed to slow down the airflow out of your lungs. Do that for several breaths and if you feel better then it is most likely anxiety. If it doesn’t help used your rescue inhalor which should be xopenex, albuterol, or combivent or something of that sort.

If you use your rescue inhalor more than 2 times in a 2 week period then you are using it to much and need an adjustment in medications.

Visit this web page for more help. It is good.

Q: Does Advair increase sneezing attacks or other kinds of allergies?
It’s really weird. I started using advair five days ago and have found that I wake up sneezing with an allergy attack every morning. Does this usually happen? Or just coincidence?

A: It’s not one of the known side-effects.

Q: Why am I told to wash my mouth really well after using Advair?
What will happen if I don’t? Has anyone been prescribed Advair for Extreme Asthma? Is it helping you? Any negative side effects? Thanks for all answers. Cheers!

A: I have been taking Advair, I was just recently diagnosed with asthma (the asthma attacks are so frightening…aren’t they?)
I was just told that the medication in Advair will “tear up” the inside of your mouth (since some of it comes to rest there and doesn’t make it into your lungs).
I haven’t had any negative side effects other than forgetting to wash out my mouth afterwards and getting a sore tongue and gums from it. I don’t think it is working very well for me and I am going to talk to my dr. about changing it, I am still having a lot of wheezing.
If you haven’t gone to the pharmaceutical company (who makes Advair) website….you should, you can get coupons for your medications sent to you no matter if you have insurance or what your income is….every little bit helps.

Q: How fast does Advair work and what should I be noticing?
Even though I’ve been taking Advair for a good 3-4 years now, I don’t think I’m noticing anything.

How long should it have taken before I began to notice any difference and what should I have been noticing?

And only up until recently (about a month ago) I had still been using my inhaler roughly 5 or more times a day…

A: You should have noticed a difference very quickly, as in a matter of days at the very most and by that I mean breathing a lot easier.

Advair containes an anti-inflammatory and a long-acting bronchodilator working together to help improve lung function and making breathing easier which you don’t appear to be having.

You need to return to your doctor as soon as you can and get a full breathing test carried out and possibly more medication.

Once you start requiring your inhaler more than twice a day, that’s the time to seek medical help.

Q: Advair – What’s the difference between the two discs?
I take 100/50 mg of Advair. However, I was given 250/50 mg the last time I received my medicine. I am almost out of mine and I was wondering if it will be safe if I take the higher one?

A: You will be fine! Me and my mom have taken advair every spring season for almost my whole life.

This last time the doc gave us the 250/50 as well and it IS a bit stronger ( slightly higher dosage)

The worst that happened to me is that I got a little dizzy one day, but then I took the med on a completely empty stomach.

Oh yea nd the pharmascist explained the higher dosage was due to our complaints of more symptoms ( well my moms anyway)

Q: Does Seretide (Advair) work if it does not come in a foil pouch?
I just found out that Seretide is the same thing as Advair, and it is so much cheaper to buy Seretide in Mexico. However, it does not come in a foil pouch like Advair. The Advair instructions emphasize that it is only good for 30 days after opening the foil pouch. So I am wondering if anyone has tried the Seretide from Mexico, without the foil pouch, and if it still works. Thanks for your help.

A: even in india seretide comes without a foil pouch and is thought to be one of the most effective and costliest.

Q: What are the side effects of ADVAIR diskus and is it safe?
My Dr. prescribed me ADVIAR and I rememebr seeign the commercial for it but the side effects seemed extreme.

If you have ever taken ADVAIR or if you are common with it, can you tell me the side effects that come with it and if it is really recommended to take?

The thought of steroids does not sound pleasant.
I am very iffy about taking this medicine because I do not have Asthma, but sometimes my bronchial tubes feel tight.

A: I have been taking ADVAIR diskus for about a week now and I have noticed no real problems with the drug. When my doctor gave me ADVAIR, I showed some concern about taking a steroid twice daily, but she told me that the side effects of this one are not the same as those of say, Prednisone. She said I would have no trouble and I have not had any. I have done some research on steroids because I have been put on them before for my lungs, and yeah the side effects are scary. The reason this one is different is because it is inhaled as opposed to taken orally. Essentially, it gets the medicine only where it really needs to be, in your lungs. I have noticed that I do not have quite as many troubles with my lungs daily, which makes me ever glad to be on it. So good luck, and hopefully you will like me, have no problems with this medication.

Q: What are the side effects of using Advair Inhalers?
Im gettting alittle scared now that i found out that Advair inhaler can actually cause death in some people, ive actually STARTED using it a week ago but im planning on to stop, is something gonna happen to me in a long run?????????

A: Coughing, bronchitis, thrush, osteoporosis, heart attack are some side effect, check out Drugs.com for more information about Advair.

Q: What are other medicines that are similar to Advair?
I’ve tried Singulair and it didn’t do much of anything. I am going to the doctor tomorrow and want to be armed with some info on alternatives. Sometimes at the clinic they don’t take the time I feel they should. I’ve found if I go with some ammunition I get further. Any alternatives for Advair and experiences would be much appreciated. Thanks!

A: In the past I used something called Tilade, it’s similar to Advair in it being a preventive inhaler. To be honest with you, I didn’t feel like it did anything that Advair hasn’t done but everybody has different results with different meds so GOOD LUCK! And good for you for staying on top of it… asthma is a scary thing.

Q: what effects does the advair diskus have on sperm?
My husband takes the advair diskus, proventil, allegra D,and singulair would that affect our chances of conceiving?

A: No, it’s fine but it’s best to talk to the doctor or call the company.

Q: What other drugs are recommended for COPD besides Advair?
Advair has caused me to gain about 50 lbs and I wonder if there’s something else out there instead of Advair.

A: A good drug used to treat COPD is albuterol (it goes by trade names such as Ventolin and Proventil). It is a bronchiodialotor which opens up the bronchi airway passages thus making it less difficult for you to breath normally. It is an inhalant that is most often used as a nebulizing treatment. You may want to also look up ipratropium bromide which is used in conjunction with albuterol sulfate to effectively treat COPD.

Side effects include:
palpitations, fast heart rate, elevated blood pressure, tremor, nausea, nervousness, dizziness, and heart burn. Throat irritation and nose bleeds can also occur.

Q: How safe is Advair, does anyone know?
I went to the doctors yesterday and he prescribed my Advair for my asthma. I have seen the commercials and it says salmuterol increases the chance of asthma related death. My asthma is really bad but I dont want to die. I want to get a grip on my asthma because right now it controls my life but this advair scares me. Anyone know anything about it or have used it?
Is it safe in pregnancy or someone who is planning on getting pregnant eventually?

A: It is true that Salmeterol increases the risk of asthma related death, however, the incidence is very rare. Your chances of dying from an asthma attack because your asthma was not well treated is far greater. It is a risk I certainly wouldn’t want to take. I would continue to use the Advair as prescribed. I have been using this medication for years and have only benefitted from it. My asthma has greatly improved.

As for whether or not it is safe in pregnancy…the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has a list of pregnancy categories. Advair is listed as a Category C drug. This means that either animals studies have shown an adverse effect and there are now adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women or no animal studies have been conducted with Advair and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. If you are pregnant or planning on becoming pregnant, I would definately discuss your options with your doctor.

Good luck to you. I hope I helped!
