Q: How dangerous is it to mix advair, inhaler, and smoke?
I was recently told that I have minor Asthma, and my doctor gave me Advair to treat it. She also gave me an inhaler just in case I need it. My first question is: if I recently had a dose of Advair, but feel like I need to use my inhaler, should I not? I’m worried that I shouldn’t mix the two.

My next question includes that I smoke hooka everynow and then. Although I haven’t quit, I have cut back. And I know that the healthiest thing to do is quit altogether. Still, I’d like to know: are there any adverse effects when somebody smokes while on advair, or using an inhaler?
I’d like to quit right now…but as anybody knows, it’s a process!

A: Smoking does not have either a direct nor an indirect effect on Advair but smoking may aggravate the underlying condition for which the Advair was prescribed. Thus smoking may increase your need for your ‘rescue’ inhaler. The other inhaler which you refer to should be albuterol (Proventil) or its active moiety levalbuterol (Xopenex). Yes there is a concern for using rescue inhalers in addition to Advair but this generally refers to the overuse of such inhalers. To understand this you must appreciate the two medications in Advair which are fluticasone and salmeterol. Fluticasone is an anti inflammatory and as ‘asthma’ is an inflammatory disorder this is first line therapy. Montelukast (Singulair) is an oral anti inflammatory which works by a different mechanism and may be combined with fluticasone. You will note that albuterol, levalbuterol, and salmeterol all have similar names as they are related drugs. They all contain warnings about the possibility of harm but as above this generally applies using them too often. It was a great development when we developed inhalers that asthmatics could carry with them and it took some time before the obvious sank in. Some patients use their inhalers more and more often as breathing declines and this has resulted in some people seeking medical attention ‘too late’ resulting in deaths. Nonetheless for periodic use the combination is not only appropriate but may delay symptoms so that you are able to seek medical treatment. Although some people will offer ‘rules’ as to how many doses per week of rescue inhaler should trigger a call to their physician I have not found this helpful. All asthmatics should have a peak flow meter where you blow into a mouthpiece that measures how much are you are able to exhale. These numbers are then used to tell someone when to restrict activities or environmental exposure, when to use rescue inhalers, and when to visit the physician. Peak flow meters are inexpensive and last indefinitely. I hope that this is helpful and good luck with your smoking cessation efforts. I wish you the very best of health.

Q: If I drop my advair inhaler after activating a dose, do I need to activate another one?
I know after activating a dose of advair you are suppose to keep the inhaler flat, but if I drop it or tip it, is the dose still good, or do I need to activate another one?

A: Yes you should do another one. My son takes Advair and occasionally does something other than keep it flat. The doctor said to be sure he gets the full benefit from it do another one if you’ve done something you’re unsure about. Better to be safe than sorry.

Q: Can you use an advair inhaler in the army?
I know you can get a waiver to get into the military. I do have asthma and I dont need an advair. Ive been playing sports my whole life and have never needed advair but when I used to use it, it did help.

A: They will not let you in the U.S. Army if you currently have asthma.

Once you are in, you can get prescribed Advair. They hand it out like candy in Iraq to soldiers who live and work near the oil refineries and burn pits. Still haven’t stopped coughing from that.

Which is one reason they don’t let people who have asthma join up.

Q: has anybody troubles with the inhaler advair?
I HAVE BEEN USING THE ADVAIR INHALER FOR A FEW MONTH NOW. ABOUT 3 WEEKS AGO WHEN I WENT TO BED I FELT JUST FINE, THEN THE NEXT MORNING I HAD MUSCLE PAIN AND WEAKNESS IN MY LEGS AND HIP. IT DOES NOT GO AWAY.

A: If you’ve been using the inhaler for a few months with no problems, I would suggest it’s not related in anyway to your muscle pain etc in your legs.
Respiratory inhalers are designed to react in the lungs only, that and the time duration suggest no link between your pains and the inhaler.

Q: Why is it good to rinse your mouth after using ADVAIR inhaler?
what if you dont?

A: there are probably many long answers, but here is a short one:
advair is made up of two medicines one of which is an inhaled steroid. when you take your twice daily inhalation some of that steroid sticks to the back of your mouth and upper throat (actually quite a bit of it does as opposed to getting down into your lungs, but, don’t worry, you can’t really help that). the steroids that are stuck to the back of your mouth and throat put you at an increased risk of getting a fungal mouth infection, namely, candidiasis or oral thrush.
i would actually recommend both rinsing your mouth and brushing your teeth to avoid this.
hope that helps.

Q: How to Use an Advair Inhaler?
My doctor prescribed me an inhaler and I’m not sure how to use it. On the labeling it says to inhale twice. Do I spray it twice or ounce when I inhale? I’m only supposed to use it for two weeks and then come back to the doctor to see if my cough went away.

A: Use it every 12 hours once in the morning and once in the evening. Only use it ONLY 2 TIMES A DAY. Inhale once in the morning and once int he evening.

Q: Can advair be taken with an inhaler?
I was wondering if an advair inhaler could be taken with an albuterol inhaler every 4 hours?

A: It can be taken that way but it is not a wise decision to do so. Advair is a “PREVENTATIVE” asthma medicine….thus it should “PREVENT” asthma. So if you are preventing asthma, then why would you need to take albuterol (a rescue medicine) every 4 hours?? Albuterol should only be used when you are having an asthma attack. I have been working with the drug companies on this and on helping the public and health care professional understand the proper usage of these meds. My docs no long order Albuterol, Duoneb, Xopenex, etc… every so many hours if the patient is receiving Advair or Symbicort. They also no longer order Albuterol, Duoneb or Xopenex every so many hours because they are “RESCUE” meds and are only meant to rescue you from an asthma attack. If you would like that info, I can see if I have it on my comp and I can email it to you. This info comes straight from the drug companies.

Q: What is Advair and how does it differ from my current inhaler?
Hey. I’ve heard the name Advair as an asthma treatment and to be honest I don’t know what it is. What’s the difference between Advair and my current inhaler which is a “Bricanyl Turboinhaler”? Thanks.

Chris.

A: Advair has fluticasone propionate and salmeterol xinafoate in it. It has both a preventative (fluticasone – steroid)) and a reliever (salmeterol – broncodilator) in it, therefore is good for long term control of asthma symptoms.

Bricanyl only has terbutaline, a bronchodilator in it. It is ideally only used when you have an asthma attack.

Please see source links below for more information.

Q: Long time taking Advair inhaler purple disk?
I been taking advair for long time to control my asthma, it does great. Now I am waiting for my insurance to athuroize my advair so I can get refill.. So I been withoutmy advair for over a week or so now. How risky is it to be without advair?

A: It is never a good idea to cut out any medication containing steroids all of a sudden. I would call your doctor to see if they might have a sample that will hold you over until your insurance goes through. Good luck and hope everything works out for you.

Q: How does the advair inhaler work?
Can you please put down a website because I could not find anything thank you!!!!!!!

A: By how does it work do you mean how do you use it? Anyway. I’m 19, and have used it for a few years now. I’m trying to wean myself off of it. I’m doing pretty good now without it. Here is the website that will tell you everything you need to know. You can also sign up for coupons for your next prescription.

Q: can someone help me find an alternative to the asthma inhaler called advair?
i dont want to take this anymore but cannot breathe without it..
Can someone help me find another alternative to this medicine and that will work as a bronchodialator?

A: One of my children is asthma sufferer and sport(especially swimming) does help. In the case of attack the singing and laughing with proper breathing exercise seems to help.

Q: I need help with my Advair inhaler?
I have no medical insurance and I have contacted everyone even the free clinic for help with the cost. It cost me 216.00 for one Advair per month and I don’t make that much money. (339.00 after taxes per week) I lost my insurance coverage after my husband was in a car accident and hasn’t been able to work in over a year. Is there any help for me?

A: go to the pharmaceutical companys website (i believe it is manufactured by glaxosmithkline), and look for a link about how to get it at reduced cost. Or google “prescription drug help”…..there are a lot of programs out there to help you obtain your medicine for a reduced cost or free of charge. Also, Advair now has a generic version, which should cost a lot less. Good luck.

Q: Has anyone had bad side effects with Advair disc inhaler?
I have tried to use it at my allergist’s suggestion on 2 different occasions. After using it 2 xs a day for a couple of weeks I would lose my voice. I believe the Advair caused it. Are there any other concerns with Advair?

A: As with any medication there are side affects and unfortuneately you have a side effect to Advair. Talk to your doctor about your concerns and see what they have to say. If they want you to continue to take the Advair but you feel that it may affect your voice let them know that you are not comfortable taking it and ask for other suggestions. However, make sure that you are rinsing out your mouth and even try gargling with water after taking Advair. If you don’t rinse or not well then you have a good chance of getting thrush(a yeast infection) in your mouth and throat that is very painful and requires lots of antibiotics. This could also lead to losing your voice. But if you rinse well and you still have the side effect, then definately talk to your doctor about it and find a different approach.

Q: Is Advair (Asthma Inhaler) Bad for you?
Is the Advair inhaler bad for you?
I’ve recently stopped taking it because I heard there were some serious health risks associated with it.
Should i keep taking it, or is it dangerous?
I think i have mild asthma, by the way.

A: Advair contains fluticasone, a corticosteroid, and salmeterol, a long-lasting beta agonist. A few years ago drugs like salmeterol were linked to an increased risk of asthma related death. There is still disagreement about whether this link is real, but in the meantime the recommendation is not to use long-lasting beta agonists unless asthma is not controlled on other drugs. Even though you have mild asthma you should have some type of controller medication for flares. Check with your doctor about switching to a low-dose fluticasone inhaler or other corticosteroid.

Albuterol (the drug commonly used in rescue inhalers for sudden attacks) is related to salmeterol, but is short-lasting, and has not been linked to this type of complication. However, overuse of albuterol can cause an increase in frequency and severity of asthma attacks, so a controller such as a corticosteroid should be available for when your asthma acts up.

Q: Why is it bad to use an advair inhaler that’s been open for over 30 days? what if someone only takes it when
they are sick, but not every day? do they need a new rx each time?

A: well packinrat has obviously no clue what he is talking about. Advair doesn’t have a propellant, it is an inhaled powder. The reason that they say not to use after being open more than 30 days is it can lose some of it’s potency and not be as effective. It won’t harm you to use it after 30 days, just might not work as well as it is supposed to.
